Uta Bullmann

 Uta Bullmann

We found ourselves in Graz for our District Council and so we made a call to Uta Bullmann who was a new member when I was here 50 years ago.  She was so happy to have us visit her in her amazing Neo-Baroque apartment.  She lives on the Goethestrasse which is right by the University of Graz.  She still has the same kind of raucous humor that was her style fifty years ago, even though she is obviously incapacitated and is confined to a wheelchair. He apartment is filled with memorabilia, books of all sorts, pictures, music, art work which must be of some value. This apartment is big and  takes up the whole third floor. She seems quite content to spend 90% of her time inside.

I remember her when she was 35, and now she is 85.  Before she moved into the Goethestrasse, she lived in the Radetzkystrasse which is where I first met her. She used to keep animals and back then she had a guinea pig for a pet.  I remember how the little darling nibbled on a new book that I had bought and left its imprint for generations.  Uta has also kept rabbits and she claims that all her books from that period have no backs because the bunnies chewed them off to get to the sweet glue. Sister Bullmann is one of a kind and very endearing.

Uta Bullmann has remained a member of the church, though not always an every Sunday church goer.  She does not understand how someone with a testimony can ever leave.  Her testimony is stronger than the offenses she has had to endure by members who didn’t accept her and her uniqueness. I have always wanted to see her again and was so happy to learn that she is still a member and still on the planet.

We had such a great time visiting and I am sure we will be coming to see her as often as we can arrange it.  She asked us to do so and though she is not in our Branch in Bruck an der Mur,  there are no senior

couples in Graz so we feel it appropriate.  Here is an example of her humor.  When an older woman  looks into a mirror it is not a matter of vanity, it is a matter of bravery.  It reads better in German but over such kind of humor, we really had a delightful time!
